1062 - Quality Improvement Project: Ultrasound-Guided Urinary Catheterization in a Community Hospital Setting

Objectives: To improve the success rate of urinary catheterization procedures among nurses through the use of ultrasound guidance. Increase the percentage of successful ultrasound-guided urinary catheterizations performed by nurses by 20% within six months.

Design: SMART Goals:

Specific: Increase the success rate of ultrasound-guided urinary catheterizations among nurses.

Measurable: Track the percentage of successful catheterizations.

Achievable: Provide training and resources for nurses.

Relevant: Improving patient care and reducing complications.
Time-bound: Achieve a 20% improvement within six months.

Developed and delivered an educational lecture on ultrasound-guided urinary catheterization techniques for nurses. Provided hands-on training with ultrasound equipment. Ensured access to necessary ultrasound equipment within the hospital. Maintain detailed records of training sessions, pre- and post-training surveys, and outcomes.

Root cause analysis:
Identified root causes contributing to unsuccessful urinary catheterizations, such as anatomical variations, lack of training, or difficulty in locating the urethra. Researched and compared the success rates of blind and ultrasound-guided urinary catheterizations in peer hospitals or institutions.

PDSA cycle:

Conclusions:
