Objectives:

During medical residency training, mentorship plays a crucial role in the residents’ academic success, their personal and professional development as well as resident well-being.

Our residency program had an existing mentorship program, but the program was informal, lacked structure, and previously yielded minimal interaction between mentors and mentees. As a result, we introduced a new mentorship model to include quarterly scheduled mentorship meetings. The goal was to promote early connections between mentors and mentees, improve residents’ feeling of academic support and satisfaction, and promote increased scholarly activities.

Design:
Time/Scheduling constraints and reservations about initiating contact with mentors were cited as barriers to mentorship meetings. Therefore, we implemented scheduled, protected time for mentorship meetings to increase accessibility and participation.

Previously, each resident was assigned one faculty mentor. We shifted to a group mentorship model, involving one resident from each PGY level, a junior faculty member, and a senior faculty member. This new model sought to increase accessibility through providing multi-level support from both senior residents and faculty members.

In addition to scheduled quarterly mentor group meetings, incoming PGY-2 had virtual or telephone meetings with their peer mentor prior to starting residency.

Program evaluation data was collected using pre and post program implementation surveys.

Results: Preliminary data shows 100% of residents found the meetings beneficial, 90% felt faculty was interested in mentoring compared to 50% from pre-implementation survey, and 90% reported satisfaction with the new mentorship program. Residents also reported that the group approach was helpful and allowed for added insight.

Conclusions: Implementing a structured mentorship program with scheduled meetings throughout the year has yielded positive early results, with increased satisfaction reported by residents. We anticipate this new model will improve the mentorship experience and residents’ academic and professional development. Follow up is needed to determine the long-term efficacy of this new mentorship model.
