588 - Influence of musculoskeletal disorders on sleep disturbance among spousal caregivers of motor-impaired patients

Objectives: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and sleep problems are common among caregivers. This study aimed to examine musculoskeletal and sleep disorders among wife caregivers of motor-impaired patients.

Design: A cross-sectional study including spousal caregivers of patients with physical disabilities. The functional statuses of patients were determined using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). Quality of sleep was assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). MSD were evaluated by the standardized Nordic Musculoskeletal (NMQ). The pain was evaluated according to the Visual Analog Scale (VAS).

Results: A total of 142 wife caregivers were enrolled in this study, with a mean age of 53.09 ±11.73. The average age of impaired patients was 58.77± 11.35 years. 85]. Forty-eight patients (33,87%) had high-grade Body Mass Index (BMI). The average score of FIM was 99.3. In our study, 71,13% of wife-caregivers reported having experienced a MSD. The pain was severe (VAS > 7) in 20% of cases with a mean VAS of 6,39 and a mean duration of 4,78 years. One hundred three caregivers (72.53%) had a pathological total score of sleep (PSQI ≥ 5). The mean PSQI scale was 7,61±4,52 [0-18]. Sleep disturbance and duration, Sleep quality and Sleep efficiency were the most affected sleep components.

On statistical analysis, BMI (p=0,02), functional status (FIM) of impaired patients (p=0.014), and pain severity (p< 0,001) were significantly associated with sleep disturbance.

Conclusions: Sleep quality can physically and psychologically damage caregivers in the long term, so sleep disorders should be regularly assessed.
