156 - Comparing 2021-2023 Match Data from Allopathic and Osteopathic Medical Schools With and Without Affiliated PM&R Residency Programs

Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate if there is a correlation between having a PM&R residency program affiliated with medical schools and the percent of applicants graduating from 2021 to 2023 who matched into PM&R.

Design: Match data was gathered from publicly available match lists. A list of PM&R residency programs was obtained from the Academy of Academic Physiatrists website to note those affiliated with medical schools.



For the 2023 data, 128 allopathic and 25 osteopathic schools were included, of which 66 and 9 schools respectively have affiliates with PM&R residencies. Prism was used to perform two-way ANOVA analyses for allopathic and osteopathic schools comparing the percentage of students matching into PM&R each year.

Results: From 2021 to 2023, an average of 1.31% allopathic and 2.43% osteopathic students per school matched into PM&R. On average from allopathic schools, 1.53% of students matched into PM&R when graduating from a school with an affiliated PM&R residency compared to 1.06% of students from schools without an affiliate. Similarly, 3.20% of osteopathic students matched into PM&R when graduating from schools with a residency affiliate versus 1.85% of students matching from schools without one.

There was a difference in the percent of students who matched into PM&R from allopathic and osteopathic schools by the presence of a PM&R affiliate (F(1,345) = 10.29, p = 0.002) and (F (1, 81) = 15.90, p < 0.001) respectively. Allopathic schools showed a difference by year (F(2,345) = 3.63, p = 0.03) as well. The difference in predicted means between programs with and without an affiliate was 0.4630% allopathic and 1.422% osteopathic students.

Conclusions: These data suggest that there is a positive correlation between having an affiliated PM&R residency program and matching into physiatry. There also appears to be an increasing percentage of allopathic students matching into PM&R each year.
