Self-reflection is a metacognitive process that can be guided and used to facilitate learning. This presentation will provide an overview of guided reflection and how it can be used in medical education. After sharing a theoretical framework describing guided reflection, we will summarize relevant literature on its use in graduate medical education. We will then include examples of how guided reflection has been integrated into our residency training program, including 1.) to facilitate resident generation of learning plans and 2.) to optimize professional behaviors. Various perspective on this topic will be provided, including those of learners, junior faculty, and more senior faculty. Participants will have an opportunity to brainstorm ways to integrate guided reflection into their own teaching and learning practice.
