How can emerging AI technologies transform rehabilitation? We will review how large language models work and how that contributes to their strengths and limitations, followed by the opportunities for these tools to improve productivity. We will also highlight the risks to be aware of, including concerns about fairness of AI for people with disabilities. While these tools have great potential, it is important for our field to proactively identify how they can improve rehabilitation practice and chart a course to achieve this. We will also discuss AI tools beyond language, including the use of computer vision to better understand and quantify movement and languages guided robotics that could benefit people with disabilities.
