Daniel I. Steinberg, MD, SFHM, FACP is Associate Dean for Quality and Patient Safety in Graduate Medical Education, Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. He also serves as Chief Patient Safety Officer in the Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS). Dr. Steinberg works to improve patient safety and quality at two acute care hospitals and multiple ambulatory facilities across lower Manhattan. He focuses on improving the reporting, analysis and prevention of serious adverse events, and on improving education in safety and quality for residents and faculty across the health system. He co-chairs the Graduate Medical Education Resident Evaluation & Promotion Committee for MSHS. A practicing hospitalist since 2002, Dr. Steinberg is a Senior Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine by the ABIM.
Dr. Steinberg earned his Doctor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine of Yeshiva University in 1998, and then completed his residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in 2002. Dr. Steinberg was the program director of the Internal Medicine residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel from 2009 to 2020. He is a Past President of the New York Chapter of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine. He received the ACGME’s 2021 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award, the highest award for program directors in the United States. Dr. Steinberg served as the Course Director and Chair of the Annual Conference Committee for SHM Converge 2021, the Society of Hospital Medicine’s annual national conference. He serves as an Associate Editor for ACP Journal Club, a regular section in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
