Professor and Associate Residency Program Director

Dr. Carol Vandenakker Albanese is a Health Sciences Clinical Professor and Associate Residency Program Director in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at University of California, Davis School of Medicine.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology as well as her medical degree at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was completed at New York University Medical Center/ Rusk Institute in New York City.
Her clinical practice has been focused on diagnosis and treatment of non-operative spine problems, both with the University of Miami Spine Center and with the UC Davis Spine Program. She established and maintained a busy Post-Polio clinic at the University of Miami in 1994 and has continued her work with polio survivors at UC Davis since 2001. Her research and publications have focused on exercise, post-polio syndrome, and aging with disability.
Dr. Vandenakker promotes quality medical education at all levels of training. In addition to Associate Residency Program Director, she serves as the PM&R Deparment Faculty Development Director, and the speicalty faculty advisor for the UC Davis medical students. On a national level, she serves as an external mentor for the Association of Academic Physiatrists’ Program for Academic Leadership.
She contributes her expertise to multiple national and international organizations. She has served as a member of the PM&R Residency Review Committee for the ACGME and as an Oral Board Item Writer for the ABPMR. She currently serves on the Nominating Committee of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. the AAP Global Academic Physiatry subcommitte, and was recently appointed to the inaugural board of the new AAP Physiatry Foundation. She serves on the Board of Directors and the Professional/ Medical Advisory Committee for Post-Polio Health International.
