Dr. John R. McGuire is a Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since 1997, he has also been Medical Director of Spasticity Management and Stroke Rehabilitation at that institution. He is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is widely acknowledged as an expert in stroke rehabilitation and the treatment of spasticity. His clinical and research interests include maximizing recovery after a stroke and quantifying motor discoordination after upper motoneuron lesions. Dr. McGuire obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota Medical school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, and a fellowship in Stroke Rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He holds memberships in many professional societies. Among these are: the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine, and the American Stroke Association. Dr. McGuire has authored or edited numerous book chapters and authored many peer-reviewed articles on motor control and spasticity management. He has also lectured extensively both nationally and internationally on these subjects with a special focus on botulinum neurotoxins in the management of spasticity.
