611 - Association of age and sex with Glenohumeral Osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objectives: Glenohumeral (GH) Osteoarthritis (OA) has a prevalence of 17%-19% among individuals aged above 40 years and 60 years, respectively. GH OA is a degenerative joint disease that affects life quality. Multiple risk factors are associated with the onset of GH OA. Therefore, the aim of the present systematic review was to establish conclusive evidence regarding sex differences and age in association with GH OA.

Design: The electronic databases PubMed, Medline and Web of Science were searched up to March 15, 2023. Articles reporting on the association of risk factors (age and sex) with GH OA were considered. We used a Newcastle-Ottawa scale to assess the quality of the studies. Meta-analysis was conducted to quantitatively summarize the association of age and sex with GH OA.

Results: A total of 24 articles were retrieved for full-text review. Out of twenty-four articles, 8 articles reporting age-specific and 5 articles reporting sex-specific associations with GH OA were included. Increasing age was associated with GH OA, [OR=3.18; 95% confidence interval (CI)-1.10-15.92]. Female sex [OR-1.78; 95%CI-0.95-3.42] was also associated with a significantly higher odds for GH OA.

Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggests that increased age and female sex are associated with GH OA. Although GH OA is a degenerative disorder and the relationship between age and GH OA is intuitive, the mechanisms and reasons for association of female sex with GH OA is not clear. Given the higher likelihood of use of upper extremity for manual labor in males, the association of female sex with GH OA deserves further scrutiny and understanding of the potential mechanisms.
