227 - “Assessing the Impact of Sensory-Cognitive Function on Mobility in Post-COVID-19 Individuals”

Objectives: The primary aim of our study was to pilot a comprehensive protocol aimed at assessing the influence of sensory-cognitive function on the gait, balance, and overall mobility of individuals with a history of COVID-19. This research is particularly relevant in the context of Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC), which has been increasingly recognized for its diverse manifestations, including sensory and cognitive impairments.

Design: We enrolled seven post-Covid individuals in their twenties for this study. We employed the Biodex Balance System to administer the modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction in Balance (mCTSIB), allowing us to measure postural control by assessing center-of-pressure path length under differing sensory conditions. Additionally, we used the mini-BESTest to provide insights into dynamic balance. To capture gait-related data, we employed a wearable sensor system, the APDM Opal while participants performed ten 10-meter laps both with and without a serial subtraction (dual) task.

Results: First, participants exhibited a remarkable 10% decrease in walking speed when engaged in dual tasks, highlighting the cognitive demands concurrent activities impose on mobility. Second, the mCTSIB emphasized the pronounced effects of visual input on balance, revealing a 42.5% increase in path length when participants' eyes were closed. Furthermore, this effect was magnified when participants stood on a foam surface, resulting in a 152.7% increase in path length. Remarkably, all participants achieved full scores on the mini-BESTest, emphasizing the critical role of sensory input in maintaining balance.

Conclusions: In conclusion, our study successfully piloted a protocol to assess the role of sensory-cognitive function in balance and gait in individuals post-COVID. These findings have practical implications for understanding the challenges individuals with PASC may face in terms of functional ability. Further research in this area can inform clinical practice and interventions for this patient population.
