Objectives: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a respiratory disease caused by SARS-CoV-2

complicating multiple systems functioning including autonomic nervous system (ANS). No

information about the relationship between ANS imbalance and COVID-19. Therefore, the aim of

the study was to investigate the relationship between ANS imbalance and exposure to

Design: 140 (24.2 ±10.4 years, 80.9% male) (45.1% exposed to COVID-19) participated in the

study. Composite autonomic symptom scale (COMPASS-31) questionnaire and Heart rate

variability (HRV) using photoplethysmography were used for measurement of ANS. Exposure to

COVID-19 was investigated using government smartphone applications

Results: there was a significant inverse weak correlation between COMPASS-31 scores, COVID-

19 exposure (r=-0.2, p=0.03). No significant association found with HRV. Height (r=-0.37,

p=0.002), and gender (r=0.30, p=0.01) were moderately correlated with COMPASS-31 among

people exposed to COVID-19.

Conclusions: Exposure to COVID-19 was associated with poorer ANS score in COMPASS-31.

Monitoring the ANS in people exposed to COVID-19 may reduce the complications that may

arise on the long run. Further research is needed with prospectively find the influence of

medical interventions.
