Professor and Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine
UT Health San Antonio
Dr. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez is an accomplished academic Physiatrist at the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston where she is an Associate Professor and the Vice Chair of Quality, Compliance, and Patient Safety for her department. She is also the Program Director of the Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship Program and the Medical Director of the Brain Injury and Stroke Program at TIRR Memorial Hermann. She earned her undergraduate degree at Rice University and her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. Her specialty is the care of patients with severe traumatic brain injury, stroke rehabilitation, and spasticity management. She has a passion for teaching, wellness, and creating an environment of inclusion. It may have stemmed from her humble beginnings in one of the poorest counties in the United States, but it now continues in the intersectionality of being a Hispanic female physician leader in a country where only 1.8% of the physician workforce is Latina. She has a passion for advocacy and promotion of women in medicine and her field via social media channels, where she is also Social Media Editor of the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. At the McGovern Medical School, she is the past-Chair of the Faculty Senate, and belongs on multiple committees and mentors students, trainees and young faculty. In the Memorial Hermann Hospital System, she is on the Medical Executive Committee at Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center, and serves as a leader of many hospital and system committees.
When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family, bargain shopping, and running all distances (from Master’s track relays to the Boston Marathon).
