929 - A Systematic Review of Platelet Rich Plasma Utilization in the Setting of Lateral Ankle Sprains Resulting in Improved Pain Scores

Objectives: To investigate the possible benefits of platelet rich plasma (PRP) in the setting of lateral ankle sprains.

Design: A systematic review and single proportion meta-analysis was conducted utilizing the PRIMSA 2020 guidelines. This systematic review utilized five databases to search for articles on the utilization of platelet rich plasma in the setting of lateral ankle sprains. Included databases were: PubMed, Embase, Scopus, WebOfScience, and Cochrane Library. Outcomes of interest include whether incorporation of PRP into the treatment of lateral ankle sprains resulted in improved pain symptoms.

Results: A systematic review of the literature was conducted and included a total of three studies which cumulatively included 78 individuals. Using the random effects model, the estimated proportion of individuals that reported an improvement of lateral ankle pain following PRP administration yielded an overall estimated proportion of 6.644 (95% CI: 3.321-9.966). Further subgroup analysis showed that low concentration PRP and high concentration PRP yielded an estimated proportion of (5.441 (95% CI 3.559-7.322) and 7.225 (95% CI 1.900-12.551)) respectively.This suggests that PRP application, whether it be high or low concentration resulted in a significant reduction in lateral ankle pain.

Conclusions: PRP therapy is a popular adjunctive treatment that has continued to gain attraction due the increasing body of literature showing the potential benefits of its application. However, there has been limited research investigating its effectiveness in the setting of lateral ankle sprains. In this study, our pooled analysis showed a reduction in pain stemming from lateral ankle sprains.
