1129 - Risk Factors and Complications of Adolescent Opioid Abuse: A literature review

Objectives: . Currently nearly a million adolescents under the age of 18 report opioid misuse or abuse in the United States. There are many factors leading to adolescent opioid abuse or misuse in the United States which can put adolescents on the pathway to many negative complications. Understanding these risk factors and the complications will help clinicians be more aware and provide better prevention, management, and care of adolescent patients. Our study seeked to review previously published literature to identify the risk factors and complications associated with adolescent opioid abuse and misuse.

Design: Databases such as PubMEd, CDC, Embase, JAMA, and SCOPUS were used as primary sources for literature. Using these sources, prior published literature was reviewed, focusing on risk factors such as mental health, earlier age of first use, family history, societal peer pressure, which correlate with opioid abuse or misuse and its complications.

Results: From the review of literature, risk factors such as earlier age of first opioid use, mental health issues such as depression, and family history of prior opiate correlated with increased adolescent opioid abuse.

Conclusions: Risk factors and complications of adolescent opioid abuse were identified. Future research should seek to optimize interventions and management of adolescent opioid abuse as well as chronicle the effects of these techniques long-term for the prevention of opioid-abuse complications.
