878 - Efficacy of auriculotemporal nerve blocks as a treatment modality in TMJ disorder: A qualitative systematic review and pooled analysis

Objectives: This systematic review and pooled analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of auriculotemporal nerve blocks in the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

Design: A comprehensive search of five databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane) yielded 501 initial results. After removing 240 duplicates, 261 papers were screened based on predefined criteria, resulting in the selection of four eligible studies. Pooled analysis was conducted for visual analog scale (VAS) and maximum mouth opening (MMO) outcomes, using data from three out of the four studies. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the effectiveness of the treatment.

Results: The pooled analysis of the selected studies demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in both VAS and MMO outcomes among patients with TMJ disorders who received auriculotemporal nerve blocks. For VAS scores, the effect size (Cohen's d) was -2.27 [p < 0.001; 95% CI: -3.11, -1.42], indicating a large treatment effect and significant pain reduction. The effect size for MMO was 0.94 [p = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.106, 1.78], suggesting a substantial increase in mouth opening capacity.

Conclusions: Based on the findings of this systematic review and pooled analysis, auriculotemporal nerve blocks appear to be an effective treatment modality for TMJ disorders. The analysis of three out of four selected studies revealed statistically significant improvements in pain levels (VAS) and mouth opening capacity (MMO) following this intervention. Further research is necessary to explore the long-term effects and potential side effects associated with this treatment approach.
